Diamond electrodes have the largest known electrochemical potential window of all electrode materials. This leads to a high current efficiency and makes many electrochemical reactions at all possible. Only diamond electrodes with almost 100% current efficiency manage to generate OH radicals directly from the water. Through this, a very effective and clean electrochemical water treatment (disinfection or COD reduction) without additional chemical is possible (Advanced Oxidation Process).

DiaCCon is one of the largest manufacturers of diamond electrodes and electrolysers for water purification using the Advanced Oxidation Process AOP. Extremely strong oxidizing agents such as the OH-radical and others are formed directly from water and can be used effectively for COD degradation and electrochemical disinfection. DiaCCon produces the electrodes, electrolysers for it and electrochemical systems using this technology.

Due to the growing projects in water treatment with diamond electrodes, DiaCCon has decided to build its own diamond coating system especially for electrodes.

This coating plant will be the largest of its kind in the world and will have four times the output of the previous types.

DiaCCon is partner in Power2Hype!

DiaCCon is partner in the Horizon Europe funded project Power2Hype, composed by a consortium of 11 partners with knowledge and expertise revolving around the electro-chemical sector and that cover different links of the H2O2 value chain. The consortium is made of solid, experienced and leading industrial organizations, renowned universities, research institutes and technology developers as well a communication agency.

Power2Hype aims to establish a sustainable electrochemical route for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production based on air and water as only feedstock and renewable energy as the sole energy source. Hydrogen peroxide will be synthesized by paired electrolysis at both the cathode and anode using an innovative custom-made 200% electrolyser. In this process diamond electrodes from DiaCCon will play a key role. Aiming for the electrification and decentralization of the chemical industry, Power2Hype proposes the TRL 5-6 demonstration of electrolytic hydrogen peroxide production at any given concentration (from 20 to 99 %) at the site where it is needed, e.g., for sanitation purposes, bleaching applications or even as propulsion fuel.

The work is divided into a set of interlinked R&D activities structured in three project phases.

The first phase of Power2Hype will address the fundamental aspects of the electrochemical H2O2 production. Partners will work on the design, synthesis, and characterization of advanced component materials, such as electrocatalysts, gas diffusion layers, anode materials and membranes.

The second project phase will focus on the cell design and scale-up for the electrochemical process and on the integration with downstream processing of the product mixtures.

The final phase of Power2Hype will concentrate all efforts on the demonstration of the integrated electrochemical process at TRL 5-6, including the downstream processing of the generated aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions to yield concentrated H2O2 of commercial value. Furthermore, the experimental work will be accompanied and supported by the implementation of a virtual demonstrator, enabling extensive modelling and predictive process integration and scale-up. The virtual demonstrator provides the ability to follow the dynamics of fluctuating renewable power supply. Based on experimental data and system modelling, the economic, environmental and societal performance and impact potential of the Power2Hype technology will be critically assessed.

DiaCCon supplies diamond electrodes for clean-up work in Fukushima

JAPAN: In 2011, the tsunami triggered by an earthquake caused one of the largest nuclear disasters ever. We are talking about the nuclear reactor accident at FUKUSHIMA in Japan. As a result, large areas and large quantities of water and other liquids were radioactively contaminated. The clean-up work on site has been going on for years and requires great care and extensive technical know-how.
The company ICUS (formerly EICC) has set itself the task of treating radioactively contaminated oil/water mixtures and has chosen advanced oxidation with diamond electrodes from DiaCCon as the cleaning process. The system with 20 square meters of diamond electrodes has now successfully gone into operation and is playing a part in the FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI decommissioning project.

These are robust and easy-to-use systems which can be integrated into your installations as complete components without any problems. As well as the versions with stainless steel cathodes, designs allowing polarity reversal can also be supplied. The modular structure enables anode surface areas ranging from 0.075 m2 up to 0.95 m2 per electrolyser
