Energy Recovery (Nasdaq: ERII) is a trusted global leader in energy efficiency technology for the water treatment industry. Building on our pressure exchanger technology platform, we design and manufacture reliable, high-performance solutions that generate cost savings, increase energy efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions across several industries.

Energy Recovery, Inc.

Energy Recovery has been the trusted gold standard in energy recovery solutions for the seawater reverse osmosis desalination industry for over a decade, thanks to the groundbreaking PX® Pressure Exchanger® technology. According to their award submission, Energy Recovery has deployed more than 35,000 pressure exchangers across seven continents, helping serve clean water to more than 70 million people per day.

The PX reduces energy consumption in SWRO desalination facilities by up to 60%, translating into an estimated $6.3 billion savings in energy costs each year for our customers.

The PX Q400 is a notable innovation for Energy Recovery in recent years. It is the company’s highest performing and highest-capacity PX available for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination and industrial wastewater facilities, with a peak efficiency of up to 98%.

At this year’s IDRA World Congress, in addition to exhibiting, Energy Recovery also led important industry discussions, including a curated panel titled “Innovative Pathways: Navigating the Energy-Sustainability Nexus in Desalination”.

One of the recently awarded contracts will include PX installations on a floating desalination barge in the Arabian Gulf, which will produce fresh water offshore before pumping it back to the mainland. Offshore desalination facilities eliminate the need for swaths of coastal land, which is often limited and expensive, making it a viable option for densely populated coastal regions. The contracts in the United Arab Emirates will incorporate both the PX Q400 and PX Q300 models, which offer operational sound levels at just 79 decibels. This will also create safer and better workplace environments for these SWRO plants.

“Energy Recovery has been the trusted gold standard in energy recovery solutions for the seawater reverse osmosis desalination industry for well over a decade,” said Rodney Clemente, Energy Recovery Senior Vice President of Water. “Our first large-scale reference in the region was contracted in 2008 and we have since grown our contracted capacity to approximately 5 million cubic meters per day underscoring our market leadership position in the United Arab Emirates. As the global leader, we continue to innovate for, and partner with, our customers to deliver best-in-class products that can be used to serve a variety of industries and plant sizes around the globe. We are truly proud to be able to partner alongside industry leaders in driving sustainable solutions that help meet growing global freshwater challenges head-on.”

Energy Recovery’s PX can reduce energy use by up to 60% in SWRO desalination facilities and provides the lowest lifecycle cost of any energy recovery device available on the market – significant savings that make SWRO desalination an attractive option to governments seeking to drought-proof their water infrastructure. The announced contracts in the United Arab Emirates are projected to save over 416 gigawatt hours per year of energy, which avoids 201,265 tons per year of harmful CO2 emissions; the equivalent of over 36,000 homes electricity use for one year.

North Africa continues to present a strong demand for SWRO desalination. Morocco is facing a years long drought that drained the country’s reservoirs to 25% full earlier this year, and the country is currently working towards a goal to supply half of its drinking water from desalination by 2030. When completed, these projects will supply over one million cubic meters per day of potable water for municipal and agricultural use – enough water for more than 600,000 Moroccans.

“Desalination is the only drought-proof source of water, and it is vital that arid regions around the world such as North Africa secure access to freshwater by investing in a diversified portfolio of water treatment technologies including energy-efficient SWRO,” said Rodney Clemente, Energy Recovery Senior Vice President of Water. “These contracts include one of the largest desalination projects in North Africa, which will help close the gap between the existing water supply and Morocco’s growing freshwater demands. In addition to supplying drinking water, over half of the projected desalination production is earmarked towards the agricultural sector, making desalination and our PX devices a pivotal actor in creating a sustainable ecosystem.”

The PX can reduce energy consumption in desalination by as much as 60% and offers the lowest lifecycle cost of any energy recovery device on the market. When these desalination projects are completed and operating, Energy Recovery estimates that the PX will prevent more than 475,000 tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere each year, the equivalent of removing more than 100,000 passenger cars from the road.

Energy Recovery (NASDAQ: ERII) announced a collection of contracts totaling nearly $17 million to supply PX® Pressure Exchanger® energy recovery devices for desalination facilities in the Gulf region. These PX devices are expected to prevent over 400,000 metric tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere each year, the equivalent of removing over 85,000 passenger cars from the road each year.

These contracts include a municipal desalination facility that will produce over 500,000 cubic meters per day (132 million gallons) to a significantly water stressed region. These facilities mark a major milestone in addressing the region’s critical water scarcity challenges and reinforcing sustainable water security. By adopting competitive and efficient seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination technology, including hundreds of PX devices, these facilities will also contribute to ongoing efforts in the region to reduce the cost of water. The facilities are for both municipal and industrial applications and the orders are expected to be fulfilled by Q4 2023.

“Energy Recovery continues to be a trusted provider of energy savings solutions for the desalination industry,” said Rodney Clemente, Energy Recovery’s Senior Vice President of Water. “Our customers rely on our expertise in producing high-quality devices to support desalination projects of all sizes across many different industries. In the Gulf region alone we have more than 200 references producing well over 15 million cubic meters per day of drought-proof fresh water.”

The PX can reduce energy consumption in SWRO desalination by as much as 60% and is trusted around the world to provide reliable service in mega desalination plants. The PX provides the lowest life cycle cost of any energy recovery device available on the market, providing significant savings to plant operators and bringing down the cost of clean water.

The PX Q400 is Energy Recovery’s highest-capacity pressure exchanger, offering best-in-class performance from our trusted, leading PX® Pressure Exchanger® with up to 98% efficiency. Thanks to its high performance and lower maintenance, the PX Q400 delivers significant energy and cost savings and offers the lowest projected life cycle cost of any proven energy recovery device (ERD) for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination and wastewater treatment.

PX Q400: The Gold Standard for High-Pressure RO

This paper explains and quantifies how the PX Q400 saves energy and operating costs in a typical desalination system compared to the high-performing industry-standard PX Q300. With improved efficiency and mixing, the PX Q400 lowers the SEC of a typical SWRO system by over 0.05 kWh/m3 or 2% compared to the same system equipped with PX Q300s. In addition, the PX Q400 has a higher unit capacity, so fewer PX devices are required for a given SWRO train capacity.
