Viewpoint: From adaptive water management to urban water resilience
21 July 2026
How can we meet water demands from rapidly growing urban populations? More and more people are migrating and will live in urban environments in the future. In Europe already, it’s estimated that more than 70 per cent of the population lives in urban areas. Increased economic activity, coupled with burgeoning populations will be restricted by the availability of fresh water unless new and sustainable forms of urban water management are developed and implemented. A sustainable urban water management approach requires the integration of water treatment and associated infrastructure by all environmental and socio-economic stakeholders. New, innovative solutions are required to integrate blue-green-infrastructure so that water, energy and traffic infrastructure work harmoniously. This will enable resilience against increased amounts of rainwater and flooding as a result of climate change.
