Rotterdam's mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb and his perspective on water

Tom Freyberg talks to Ahmed Aboutaleb, mayor of Rotterdam, during Aquatech China 2017 in Shanghai. Mr. Aboutaleb opened the trade exhibition by giving a keynote speech about the importance of knowledge sharing in relation to water.

In this interview Mr Aboutaleb emphasizes on the importance of water in the world by mentioning that water management is one of the key aspects of what should be included when sharing knowledge.

“Water is not just an isolated issue, water is everything; sports, life, special planning. It‘s not only an international geographical political issue but water is also an instrument for peace in the Middle East. Without water there is no life.”

He also mentions a recurring tragedy in Africa, which is starvation due to climate change and lack of water. Mr Aboutaleb remarks that the ignorance of this situation is a serious problem.

It’s is unfair to complain about new African refugees coming to Europe, as those people are not to blame, because in his opinion, the whole world is to blame when it comes to water and water management.
