Lewatit for PFAS removal

Effective PFAS removal
The newly developed fine-grain Lewatit MDS TP 108 is an ion exchange resin that removes short-chain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from water. Such PFAS molecules with three or fewer carbon atoms are the smallest representatives of this substance class and are often the most difficult to remove in water treatment. Compared to ion exchange resins with standard bead sizes, Lewatit MDS TP 108 lasts twice as long in some cases, which can lead to significant cost savings.

LewaPlus goes online
LANXESS is introducing a cloud-based version of the LewaPlus design software for planning and dimensioning ion exchange systems. The tool complements the existing desktop solution. This preliminary version is initially to be used for the calculation of water demineralization. Further modules will follow. As before, LANXESS offers the software free of charge.

Ultrapure water for microelectronics
Highly purified water, known as ultrapure water (UPW), is indispensable for the production of wafers or the complex, wet-chemical process steps of photolithography in the production of micro- and nanoelectronics. Semiconductor components such as processors, memory chips, LEDs, LCD and LED displays and photovoltaic modules are manufactured using these processes. Ultrapure water is also used in microsystems technology, for example in the production and processing of miniaturized mechanical components for micropumps, micromotors and microvalves. For these applications, LANXESS offers the mixed-bed resins Lewatit UltraPure 1295 MD, Lewatit UltraPure 1296 MD Plus and Lewatit UltraPure 1297 MD, which are specially tailored to the respective application field.

Processing of metal concentrates for battery materials
With the Lewatit MK 51 ion exchange resin, users can remove boron from metal concentrates and thus obtain high-purity materials for battery production. Unlike solvent extraction, ion exchange technology does not use any environmentally harmful, flammable solvents. This can save investment costs, as ion exchanger plants do not need to be equipped with explosion protection. They can also be built more compactly.

Biofouling control for RO and NF membranes
Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes are essential for the resilient water supply in many different industries. However, the function of such membranes can be severely affected by biofouling, causing an increase in energy consumption and the need to shut down water production. These effects of biofouling are not only costly. Biofouling and frequent cleanings can also result in a shorter membrane lifespan and significantly affect both the quality and quantity of the water supply. LANXESS’s non-oxidizing biocides Aqucar DB 20, Kathon WTE and Aqucar GA 50 for biofouling control provide efficient protection of industrial membrane systems against microbiological fouling, ensuring a reliable supply.

Advantages for customers and users
“We plan to provide LewaPlus users with an online version of our calculation tool in the future,” says Dr. Stefan Neufeind, Head of Business Development and Applications at the LANXESS Liquid Purification Technologies (LPT) business unit. “Users will then be able to access the program via the internet. Installation on local computers is not necessary. Of course, all common browsers are supported.” This also enables access with any end device, such as tablet computers or smartphones. The scope of services also provides an export function that allows users to download the results for their own documentation and data storage.

LewaPlus: Calculation and design software
The LewaPlus design software enables the planning and dimensioning of ion exchange systems, including individual processes and simulations. Users can calculate a wide range of system configurations that enable flexible use in the water treatment and food and beverage industries. With the goal of creating processes that are as sustainable as possible, LewaPlus helps to identify the ideal system configuration to enhance productivity and conserve chemicals and water.

Lewatit MK51 removes boron impurities
To produce high-quality batteries with a high energy density and a long service life, battery metals, such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, must be available in the purest possible form. During ore mining, these metals are often contaminated with boron due to the nature of the ore. This boron must be selectively removed so that the battery metals are as pure as possible after extraction. ”Our Lewatit MK51 is ideal for this purpose because it only binds boron. Other components of the metal concentrates, such as sulfate, hydrogen carbonate and chloride, do not interact with the resin. This facilitates the production of high-purity battery metal concentrates which can then be further processed,“ says Steinhilber.

Sustainable processes
The use of ion exchangers enables highly efficient refining processes that can be used to produce high-performance batteries with a good CO2 and water balance. Large quantities of water are used in the processing of ores – from the cleaning of the raw ores to extracting the pure metals. Recovering and, if necessary, separating the metal ions from this water is essential for both economic and ecological reasons.

Lewatit ion exchange resins can selectively bind specific metal ions. They can also be used to remove by-products, such as zinc from nickel and cobalt electrolytes or cobalt from nickel salt solutions. The metal ions are removed from the aqueous solution and simultaneously concentrated on the ion exchange resin for further processing or recovery from wastewater streams.

Since May 2024, the Belgian company De Watergroep has been operating the containerized water treatment plant on site. It will be used for at least two years, after which the plan is to switch to alternative water sources with lower PFAS levels. The objective is to permanently reduce the PFAS contamination of drinking water in Flanders to below 50 ppt and thus increase the quality of the water.

“Together with our customer De Watergroup, our Lewatit TP 108 DW ion exchange resin has been installed to remove PFAS from drinking water. The system meets the latest standards in drinking water treatment technology and achieves outstandingly low levels of PFAS in the filter effluent compared to other technologies. Modular systems for drinking water treatment are also a solution for the treatment of drinking water worldwide,” says Bjoern Dinges, Application Technology Manager at LANXESS.

The system is installed directly in the drinking water pipe. With a PFAS concentration of 80 ppt, the water supplied is still below the limits. To achieve a long service life, pre-filtration is used. The chlorine is removed before the IEX filters, i.e. the ion exchangers, and is re-dosed after it has passed through. LANXESS will support the project for two years and continuously record the process and performance data.

LewaPlus® allows for planning of ion exchange (IX), reverse osmosis (RO), and ultrafiltration (UF) systems under a variety of system configurations, including some unique process configurations only available with Lewatit® product technology.

The design software is unique in the water treatment industry, since it offers not only the possibility to treat one stream after the other (one dimensional) but to design complex treatment systems (two dimensional) with different technologies.
