Filtering the unfilterable: Next BreakOuts to focus on industrial water treatment

The next Aquatech BreakOuts will take a deeper dive into the topic of industrial water treatment, looking closely at innovations in membrane technologies.

Unlocking industrial reuse with advanced membranes

Will the continued evolution in material science enable water treatment technologies to become robust enough to unlock previously seen ‘unfilterable’ industrial wastewaters? How can advanced membranes help to unlock water reuse applications to help quench the thirst of industrial activity?

These questions and more will be addressed in the next Aquatech Online BreakOuts live event, taking place on September 21st.

Co-organised in partnership with WETSUS ahead of the Industrial HUB at Aquatech Amsterdam in November, and sponsored by 3M, this BreakOuts will address notable technology innovations and applications across industrial settings, including cleaning, food & beverage, pulp & paper and the dairy industries.

Entitled ‘Filtering the unfilterable: Notable innovations in industrial water treatment’, speakers will include:

  • Antoine Kemperman, Senior Researcher, University of Twente & Senior Advisor, WETSUS
  • Chris Wyres, CEO, G2O Water Technologies
  • Jos van Dalfsen, R&D Manager, Wafilin Systems
  • Norbert Selzer, Market and Application Development Manager EMEA, 3M
  • Moderator: Tom Freyberg, Content Director, Aquatech Global Events.

The 60-minute webinar will feature an overview of industrial treatment challenges and opportunities, as well as three application case studies. There will then be a 30-minute virtual roundtable discussion, hosted by Norbert Selzer from 3M.

Recovering potato wastewater

Kickstarting proceedings, Antoine Kemperman, senior researcher, University of Twente & senior advisor at WETSUS will provide an overview of industrial water challenges and notable filtration innovations.

One case study will provide an overview of the DUCAM project – the Sustainable Concentration of Potato Juice with membranes.

The project involved collaboration between Dutch food company, Avebe and membrane company, Wafilin Systems to help produce water from potato juice to be reused.

Avebe previously said that the collaboration enabled the organisation to make “great strides towards achieving our sustainability goals”, by saving water, energy and CO2 emissions.

The new membrane filtration application enabled water to be extracted as a potential source onsite, and won the Water Innovator of the Year award 2021, during the online conference Water Vision 2021.

The company will also share experience on other notable projects, including the sustainable alternative for protein recovery in starch processing, as well as membrane systems applied in the fermentation processes.

Enhancing membrane performance with graphene

Another case study will address the enhancement of industrial wastewater filtration using graphene and 3D printed membranes.

Aquatech Online previously reported on the development of G2O Water Technologies’ graphene oxide coating that it had planned to license to be applied to polymeric and ceramic membranes to improve performance.

During the BreakOuts, CEO Chris Wyres will provide results from a full-scale, commercial application treating wastewater from the UK’s largest industrial laundry company.

The case study will discuss how a graphene oxide coating can enhance polymer and ceramic membranes and why this is important, especially for industrial end uses for which water recycling may not be economically feasible at all because of conventional membrane limitations.

The BreakOuts takes place on September 21st at 16:00pm CET/9am CET. More information can be found on The Road to Aquatech Amsterdam page.
