5 songs about water to help distract & relax

The magic of music during a lockdown

In times of uncertainly, music can unite and bring people together.

Music knows no boundaries; a great song can make people dance regardless of race, gender, religion, or what’s featured in the news that day.

And during the coronavirus-crisis, music has become the glue that brings together nations when they need unity the most.

One great example is in Italy (video below), one of the worst-hit nations in Europe.

Despite being in lockdown from Covid-19, residents from Naples came together harmoniously, singing and playing instruments from their balconies to boost morale.

As well as uniting people, music can be a great distraction, improve mental health and ultimately, help people to keep positive when facing negative headline after headline. Here at Aquatech Online this got us thinking: which songs have featured water in either their title, or the lyrics, and are worth sharing to help unite water professionals? Below we brought together a list of five songs to get started. This list is purely subjective, but we believe it’s a solid mix that can be played as background music and enjoyed while many people will be working remotely in the coming weeks.

So please play, share, turn up the volume and enjoy!

Artist: Passenger

Song title: Young as the morning, Old as the sea

Fun fact: Passenger’s name is Michael David Rosenberg from the UK city of Brighton. After releasing one album, the band split up but the lead singer went on to continue with the name. The most successful single so far has been “Let Her Go”.

Lyric sample:

I wanna lay by a lake in Norway,
I wanna walk through Swedish fields of green
I wanna see the forests of Finland,
I wanna sail on a boat on the Baltic sea
I wanna feel the Russian winter,
I wanna go to my Polish grandmother's home
I wanna see Hungarian lanterns,
I wanna walk on the road that leads to Rome
I wanna be free as the winds that blow past me
Clear as the air that I breath
To be young as the morning
And old as the sea

Artist: Jack Johnson

Song title: Drink the water

Fun fact:Former professional surfer Jack Johnson grew up on the north shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii. It was while recovering from a surfing injury aged 17 that he concentrated on playing the guitar. After enrolling at the University of California, he made the surf documentary Thicker Than Water (2000) before releasing his debut album – Brushfire Fairytales in 2001, which climbed into the top 40 of the US album chart.

Lyric sample:

Drink the water drink it down
This time I know I'm bound
To spit it back up
I didn't want this
Salty substitute, just not going to do
I need some air, if I'm going to live through
This experience reminds me of a clock
That just won't tick
I want to wake up
From this concussion
But my dream is just not done
I'm late again,
It's just one of those
Bad days look outside and
Be careful what you ride
You just might find
That you're out of time
To swim ashore
If I drift long enough
I'll be home

Artist: The Fleet Foxes

Song title: Grown Ocean

Fun fact: The American indie folk band was formed in Seattle and are considered by many to be one of the frontrunners of the modern folk movement. Their 2011 self-titled album Fleet Floxes went platinum in the UK. A super chilled song worth checking out.

Lyric sample:

In that dream, I'm as old as the mountains
Still as starlight reflected in fountains then
Children grown on the edge of the ocean
Kept like jewellery, kept with devotion
In that dream moving slow through the morning time
You would come to me then, without answers
Lick my wounds and remove my demands for now
Eucalyptus and orange trees are blooming
In that dream, there's no darkness a-loomin'
In that dream, moving slow through the morning time
In that dream I could hardly contain it
All my life I will wait to attain it
Then, then, then, oh

Artist: Massive Attack

Song title: Tear Drop

Fun fact: Originating from UK city Bristol, Massive Attack were said to be the genesis point of the trip-hop movement, with the band’s roots dating back to 1983. A relaxing classic for any occasion!

Lyric sample:

Water is my eye
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Of a confession
Fearless on my breath
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Artist: The Who

Song title: Water

Fun fact: Considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide, The Who were formed in London in 1964. The song ‘Pinball Wizard’ is still considered one of the band’s biggest critical and commercial successes. ‘Water’ is heavier than the previous four songs, so maybe worth saving for the coffee break!

Lyric sample:

The foreman over there hates the gang,
The poor people on the farms get it so rough,
Truck drivers drive like the devil,
The policemen they're acting so tough.
They need water,
Good water,
They need water,
And I'm sure there isn't one of us here
Who'd say no to somebody's daughter.
No, no, no, no, no.
