Route map for net zero water spurs climate action

Water utilities have one of the most important responsibilities among service providers: providing safe drinking water and removing and treating wastewater from residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Operating water-supply networks, utilities are responsible for removing contaminants from water sources, such as groundwater, surface water and seawater, before pumping and piping clean water to their customers. After water has been consumed, utilities are then tasked with removing wastewater for treatment before discharging clean water to the environment. Shrinking water supplies, coupled with increased demand from industrial, agricultural and residential markets, mean the day-to-day operation of water utility networks is coming under increasing pressure.
